SUE JARVIS

Sue was born in Mutare, Zimbabwe, in 1953. When she was a child, her father, Ian Ross, a dentist, was relocated to Zambia.Sue spent most of her childhood in Zambia. When Sue was 12 her family had to flee back to Zimbabwe due to politiacal unrest.
They moved back to Mutare where she met Iain Jarivs. Iain and Sue got married in 1979. During their years in Mutare, together they started, founded and ran Cecil Kop, a small game park on the border of Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
Unfortuantely due to the war and other difficult circumstances they gave up Cecil Kop and took to farming in Shamva.

In between farming they started Hippo Pools in the neighbouring National Park, the Umfurudzi Safari Area. When the war ended and Zimbabwe became independant in 1980, Iain and Sue were able to get Hippo Pools going full time.They ran Hippo Pools as an education camp for teenagers. As time went by it became more of a tourist and local Wilderness Camp.

Iain and Sue have five daughters which all grew up in this beautiful environment in the National Park on the banks of the Mazowe River.

As owners, managers, guides and wildlife protectors, Iain and Sue got to know the bush very well. Sue has been painting all her life. Her knowledge and interest in wildlife is shown in all her paintings.

They pioneered in 1980 and for 23 years they struggled to keep Hippo Pools open. Due to political instability they were forced to run Hippo Pools part time. Sue has moved to the capital city, Harare, where she now stays full time.
Hippo Pools is no longer operating due to squatters and threat of violence. We are all hoping for political stability in Zimbabwe in the near future so the farmers may continue to provide the people with employment and food, Iain may continue to protect wildlife that is currently being pouched on a large scale, Hippo Pools may be reopened and Sue may go back to painting.
