HARRY TAAKA


Harry Taaka was bon on the 21st August 1939 in Harare, Zimbabwe, from a poor family. He went to school up to Standard 6. He is married with 5 children. Harry has had no formal training, other then his early childhood observation of his father and grandfather making traditional objects.

Harry started sculpturing from 1956 and he also worked with the late Cannon Edward, Paterson and Boira Muteki. He held his first Exhibition in Beira Mozambique in 1972, and also had a Solo exhibition at the Monomatapa Hotel in 1975, National Gallery of Zimbabwe from 1986 – 1995. He received a highly commended award in 1990 and 1995 from the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.

Harry seeks to work alone, keeping his mind focused on his own distinct impressions rather then being influenced by the style and thought of others. Most of his work has been exhibited in Europe, USA and South Africa. Currently his work in being exhibited at Ambassador Art Gallery.
